Koffers, Rollen en Tassen. Hoe neem jij jouw bagage mee op de motor?

Suitcases, Rollers, and Bags. How do you take your luggage with you on your motorcycle?

I'm going on a motorcycle holiday and I'm taking... From a sleeping bag to a bottle of oil, it's always a challenge to fit all your luggage on the motorcycle. How do you ensure your motorcycle is packed safely and comfortably? Here are my tips.

Motorcycle Panniers

Panniers come in all shapes and sizes. I recommend panniers that you can pack from the top. There are a lot of side panniers that have luggage space in both the lid and the case itself, and that you have to lay flat to pack. In my opinion, this is very inconvenient. A plus is that you can often lock panniers. The biggest disadvantage of panniers is that they are very vulnerable, especially plastic ones. If you fall with your motorcycle, the panniers or luggage rack can easily be damaged, and even your motorcycle can get damaged. You also wouldn't be the first to get your panniers snagged on something or even rip them off. When purchasing, think carefully about which capacity (liters) suits you best. Riding with heavily loaded panniers is not pleasant. Experience also shows that the bigger your pannier, the more (unnecessary) items you bring. Riding with a pannier set may seem convenient, but it doesn't always make riding more enjoyable.

Saddlebags

Instead of panniers, you can also opt for saddlebags. Tip: choose waterproof bags or a set with rain covers. The bags are often light and narrow, keeping motorcycle riding comfortable. Compared to panniers, the capacity is often smaller, and a disadvantage is that you cannot lock the bags. In my opinion, the biggest advantage is that the bags themselves can hardly be damaged, and they also won't damage your motorcycle or luggage rack. The chance of getting them snagged is also much smaller.

Dry Bag

Behind the rider, there is more than enough space to carry luggage. For holidays, a dry bag is ideal for this. These are standard waterproof and you can store a lot of items in them. Dry bags come in different sizes and variations. My preference is for versions with the opening on the long side, as this makes it easy to access all your belongings.

Tank Bags

Tank bags are still very common. A big advantage is that you can still carry a passenger. You can easily store your belongings in it and have them quickly at hand. Whether you find this comfortable to ride with is very personal. It also depends on the type of motorcycle you have. This bag sometimes causes irritation when refueling and can get in the way when making sharp turns.

Seat Bag

For a weekend trip, a dry bag is often too large. A seat bag is a nice in-between size. You strap it to your pillion seat. Ideal for motorcycles without a luggage rack. However, no one else can sit on the back. The seat bag is also a good replacement for the tank bag.

Leg Bags

Leg bags are increasingly popular. They come in many shapes and sizes. In some bags, you can easily carry your sunglasses, wallet, keys, and an extra pair of gloves. The advantage is that you don't have anything in your pockets and don't have to tie anything to your motorcycle. You always have important items securely on your person.

Handlebar Bags and Crash Bar Bags

Besides all the bags mentioned above, there are also handlebar bags and crash bar bags with a small capacity. You can't really store much in them, and your handlebars also need to be suitable for them. I like to have several small bags to easily organize my luggage. I often put a snack and something to drink in these bags.
